When people seek treatment for alcoholism, they don’t always do it for themselves. Sometimes, they aren’t in an emotional place where they really care what happens to them. If they did, they’d be seeking treatment without someone else trying to convince them to do so. However, even people who aren’t interested in seeking alcohol treatment for themselves will often do it for their family members and close friends. If they know that people are counting on them, even if they don’t understand why those people still care about them, there’s something that they have to take care of — and that means seeking treatment.
Children are one of the most important reasons to seek treatment for an alcohol problem or some other kind of addiction, for two reasons. Not only do children feel neglected and sad when they’re mistreated by a parent who’s drinking too much, but children also often mimic what they see. If you drink in front of your children all your life, the odds are higher that they’ll be drinkers, too. Even if you don’t think there’s much point to your life, you surely don’t want your children to end up struggling like you are.
By helping yourself, you’ll help them. They’ll learn that even good people can have failings and problems and struggles. They’ll also learn that it’s a much braver thing to ask for help than it is to try to do things all alone. It’s important to show them that getting help is valuable, and even people who seem to have serious problems can get better. It won’t be an overnight process, for you or for them, but in the end everyone in the family will be much healthier and better off. So if you have an alcohol problem, make the choice to seek treatment and overcome the chains of addiction.
